Property for Monastic Training and Spiritual Education

Phase One: Establishing a Home for the Liberation Path

The Arahanist Order of Canada is seeking a suitable property in Southern Ontario to establish a religious and contemplative centre as the first phase of a longer-term plan to develop a Theravāda Buddhist monastic training centre—a Buddhist seminary dedicated to renunciation, meditation, Dhamma education, and the training of future bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs.

Phase One focuses on securing a suitable building that can serve as a Dhamma hall and place of worship, meditation, and spiritual education. A former church or chapel would be particularly suitable because it may already provide the spacious gathering hall needed for these activities. A property with a separate house, rectory, or other residential accommodation would be especially valuable.

Phase Two will focus on developing suitable residential facilities for monastic training, retreat accommodation, and the formation of prospective monastics. By proceeding in stages, we hope to establish the centre responsibly, making the best possible use of existing buildings and available resources while avoiding unnecessary construction expenses and regulatory complications.

Phase One: A Dhamma Hall and Place of Worship

Our immediate priority is to find a building suitable for regular meditation, Dhamma instruction, religious gatherings, and contemplative programs.

We are particularly interested in former churches, chapels, and other religious properties that are underused, becoming available through congregational restructuring, or seeking a new long-term purpose.

A former church could provide a suitable main hall for meditation and teaching while continuing to serve as a place of worship. Where a congregation wishes to preserve its Christian worship and activities, we would welcome discussions about shared use, provided the arrangement is suitable for both communities.

A separate rectory, clergy residence, or house on the property would be an additional advantage. Such accommodation could support the initial needs of resident monastics while providing a foundation for the centre’s future development.

We are also open to suitable schools, retreat centres, and other institutional properties that can accommodate the intended religious activities.

Our aim is to identify a building that can be put to use with minimal unnecessary conversion, expense, and regulatory uncertainty.

Acoustic Suitability for Meditation

An important consideration is the acoustic character of the proposed Dhamma hall.

Our community conducts contemplative programs involving crystal singing bowls and other resonant instruments, alongside silent meditation and Dhamma instruction. We therefore seek a quiet, spacious hall with pleasant natural acoustics, allowing sustained tones to resonate clearly without excessive or distracting echoes.

Good sound isolation from neighbouring properties is also important, allowing regular meditation and contemplative programs to take place without unnecessarily disturbing nearby residents or other occupants.

Former churches and chapels may be promising candidates because of their spacious interiors and distinctive acoustic qualities. However, each property would need to be assessed individually to determine its suitability.

Phase Two: Developing a Monastic Training Residence

The longer-term vision is to develop a dedicated residence and training environment for bhikkhus and bhikkhunīs, together with appropriate accommodation for short-term retreats.

The centre will aspire to function as a Arahanist seminary, integrating disciplined monastic living, Dhamma study, meditation, and the practical requirements of renunciant training.

Depending on the property and available resources, Phase Two may involve adapting existing residential buildings, expanding suitable accommodation, or developing additional facilities where permitted.

The objective is to establish an environment where prospective monastics can prepare for and undertake the renunciant life, supported by suitable accommodation, systematic spiritual education, and sustained meditation practice.

We intend to develop this phase gradually, according to the centre’s needs, the suitability of the property, and the resources available.

Property Requirements and Permitted Use

We are seeking a suitable property in Southern Ontario, preferably within reasonable driving distance of the Kawartha Lakes area, Kitchener, and the Greater Toronto Area.

Our preferred property would include:

  • An existing church sanctuary, chapel, or spacious hall suitable for meditation and religious gatherings.
  • A quiet interior with pleasant natural acoustics and good sound isolation.
  • A separate house, rectory, or other residential building, if available.
  • Sufficient parking and practical access for monastics, visitors, and program participants.
  • The potential to accommodate future monastic residence and training facilities.

We are also open to properties that meet the essential requirements without satisfying every preference.

The legal suitability of a property is equally important. We will need to establish whether its existing zoning, permitted uses, occupancy arrangements, and building conditions can accommodate the proposed religious activities and, where applicable, residential use, retreat accommodation, and future monastic training.

Our aim is to find a property where Phase One can begin with minimal conversion and expense, while leaving a realistic path for future development.

Supporting the Project Through Dana

In Theravāda Buddhist countries such as Myanmar, Thailand, and Sri Lanka, monasteries and monastic training institutions have traditionally depended on the generosity of lay supporters. Through dāna—the practice of giving—supporters help provide the material conditions necessary for monastic life, Dhamma education, and the continuation of the renunciant tradition.

The Arahanist Order of Canada seeks to develop this same spirit of generosity and shared responsibility in Canada.

Through Padma Refuge Foundation, a Canadian registered religious charity, we aim to seek donations and other forms of support toward establishing the centre. Contributions may help secure a suitable property, prepare the Dhamma hall, provide essential facilities, and, in the longer term, develop accommodation for monastic training.

We also welcome inquiries from individuals, families, Buddhist communities, charitable foundations, and potential benefactors who may be interested in supporting the project through financial contributions, property donations, or other appropriate arrangements.

Subject to the charity’s policies and applicable Canadian requirements, we would like to explore ways of recognizing substantial supporters, including the possibility of priority access to designated facilities or priority booking for certain programs. Any such arrangements would need to be clearly defined and consistent with the charitable purpose of the project.

Our intention is to build a sustainable foundation for monastic training through generosity, cooperation, and the responsible use of resources.

An Opportunity to Preserve and Renew a Spiritual Space

We recognize that some churches and religious institutions face declining attendance, rising maintenance costs, or uncertainty about the future use of their buildings. Yet these properties may still possess considerable spiritual, architectural, and community value.

Where appropriate, shared use could allow an existing Christian congregation to continue its worship and activities while our community uses designated facilities at other times. Such an arrangement could also help share operating expenses and keep the building in meaningful religious use.

We would approach these opportunities with respect for the property’s existing traditions and a commitment to constructive cooperation.

An Invitation to Cooperate

The establishment of a Dhamma hall is the first practical step toward our longer-term vision of a Theravāda Arahanist monastic training centre in Southern Ontario.

We welcome inquiries from churches, dioceses, religious organizations, charitable foundations, property owners, and individuals who may know of a suitable property or wish to support this initiative.

We are open to a range of possibilities, including a donated property, charitable transfer, affordable long-term lease, shared-use arrangement, substantially discounted property, or manageable purchase.

A building that no longer meets the needs of one congregation may offer a new opportunity to serve as a place of worship, contemplation, and spiritual education for future generations.

If you have or know of a suitable property, are exploring the future of an underused religious building, or wish to support the development of this centre, we warmly invite you to get in touch.
