The Arahanist Order of Canada
A Canadian Theravāda Lineage
OUR MISSION
Preserving and Transmitting Gautama’s Liberation Path
Arahanism — The Liberation Path of Gautama, the Supreme Arahant.
5. Teaching, Publishing, and Transmitting the Dhamma
The Arahanist Order of Canada regards the teaching and transmission of Gautama’s Liberation Path as an essential responsibility. Preserving the true Dhamma requires not only maintaining its textual foundations and training renunciants, but also making its teachings accessible to those who wish to study, understand, and practise the path.
Through Dhamma instruction, meditation guidance, publications, translations, commentaries, and scholarly research, the Order seeks to communicate the principles and practical methods of liberation to both renunciants and interested lay practitioners.
Dhamma Teaching and Spiritual Education
The Order seeks to provide systematic Dhamma education grounded in the Pāḷi Canon and the Theravāda textual tradition. Its teaching encompasses ethical discipline, sense restraint, renunciation, Samādhi, Paññā, and the progressive cultivation of the complete Liberation Path.
Meditation instruction is an important component of this undertaking. Through appropriate guidance in Samatha and Vipassanā, practitioners are encouraged to develop concentration, contemplative understanding, and the wisdom necessary for overcoming worldly attachment.
The purpose of teaching is not merely to communicate religious knowledge or philosophical concepts, but to help practitioners understand the path and undertake its cultivation in their own lives.
Publications, Translation, and Research
The Order is committed to developing and publishing books, translations, commentaries, and research materials that contribute to the understanding and transmission of Gautama’s liberation teaching.
These publications include studies of the Pāḷi Canon, comparative examinations of religious and philosophical traditions, explorations of renunciant spirituality, and systematic explanations of the principles underlying Arahanism.
We place particular importance on preserving original Pāḷi terminology while making the teachings accessible to contemporary readers through careful translation and explanation.
Through these efforts, we seek to contribute to scholarly discussion, support serious spiritual study, and provide reliable resources for future generations.
Sharing Knowledge Freely for the Benefit of Humanity
We believe that knowledge should be preserved and shared freely for the benefit of humanity. This commitment is especially important concerning the Dhamma, whose ultimate purpose is the liberation of beings from worldly bondage.
Accordingly, the Order extends its commitment to publication beyond conventional printed books and commercial distribution. We seek to make our written teachings, translations, commentaries, and research openly accessible through modern digital technologies.
As part of this initiative, the Arahanism Publications corpus is made available through two complementary international platforms: Zenodo, providing scholarly archival records with DOI identification, and Hugging Face, providing structured, machine-readable datasets for computational research and artificial intelligence applications.
By preparing our publications in accessible digital formats, we aim to facilitate their use by practitioners, scholars, researchers, developers, and future knowledge systems. This includes opportunities for digital preservation, computational textual analysis, searchable knowledge repositories, and AI-assisted research.
Our digital publications are made available under open licensing arrangements, allowing others to access, share, and build upon these resources in accordance with the applicable licence terms.
We regard this initiative as a contribution to the global knowledge commons. Our intention is not simply to distribute our own publications, but to make the knowledge developed through Arahanism available for independent examination, further research, and the benefit of future generations.
The technologies through which knowledge is transmitted will continue to evolve. Our responsibility is to make the true Dhamma accessible through these changing environments while preserving its original terminology, textual foundations, and liberating purpose.
Ultimately, teaching, publication, and research serve one fundamental objective: ensuring that Gautama’s Liberation Path remains available to those who sincerely wish to understand and undertake it.
6. Establishing and Sustaining a Living Renunciant Order
The Arahanist Order of Canada seeks to establish and sustain a living renunciant community dedicated to preserving and transmitting Gautama’s Liberation Path.
We understand that a genuine renunciant tradition cannot be sustained through publications, doctrinal statements, or individual spiritual practice alone. It requires a living community of practitioners, experienced teachers, appropriate training environments, established disciplinary standards, and the conditions necessary for successive generations to undertake the renunciant life.
The establishment of the Arahanist Order is therefore directed towards creating a sustainable monastic and spiritual institution in which the true Dhamma can be studied, practised, taught, and transmitted.
Establishing a Monastic and Spiritual Centre
The Order seeks to establish a permanent institutional foundation in Canada, providing appropriate facilities for monastic residence, meditation, Dhamma education, communal chanting, spiritual instruction, and renunciant training.
Such a centre is intended to serve as more than a place for religious gatherings. It should provide an environment conducive to simplicity, solitude, discipline, contemplative cultivation, and the progressive relinquishment of worldly attachments.
The development of appropriate monastic facilities, meditation spaces, educational resources, and residential accommodations will form an important part of this undertaking.
Cultivating a Living Renunciant Community
The Order seeks to bring together bhikkhus, bhikkhunīs, novice renunciants, committed lay practitioners, and supportive members of the wider community in a shared commitment to the Dhamma.
The renunciant community provides the foundation for preserving monastic discipline, transmitting practical knowledge, supporting spiritual training, and maintaining continuity in the teaching tradition.
Lay practitioners also have an important role through material support, voluntary service, participation in Dhamma activities, and the cultivation of ethical and spiritual discipline. Their support helps establish the conditions in which renunciants can dedicate themselves to the full-time practice of the Liberation Path.
We therefore recognize the relationship between renunciants and lay supporters as an essential part of sustaining a living religious community.
Preserving Monastic Discipline and Lineage
The continuity of the Order depends upon maintaining proper standards of monastic conduct, ordination, training, and communal responsibilities.
The Order is committed to upholding the Theravāda Vinaya framework for full monastic ordination and discipline while developing its own institutional identity as a Canadian Theravāda lineage dedicated to Arahanism.
We also aspire to establish appropriate opportunities for both male and female renunciants to undertake the complete monastic vocation, including the development of a Bhikkhunī training and ordination framework in accordance with applicable Vinaya requirements.
Through the cultivation of qualified teachers, the training of successive generations of renunciants, and the preservation of established disciplinary standards, the Order seeks to ensure that its spiritual and institutional foundations can endure.
Building for Future Generations
The establishment of a living renunciant tradition is a long-term undertaking. It requires sustained commitment, responsible institutional stewardship, appropriate resources, and the cooperation of renunciants and lay supporters.
The Arahanist Order therefore seeks to develop its institutions progressively, ensuring that organizational growth remains directed towards its spiritual purpose rather than becoming an objective in itself.
Our aspiration is to establish a sustainable renunciant community in which the teachings of Gautama can continue to be studied, practised, and transmitted through successive generations.
Ultimately, the value of the Order lies not in the size of its institutions or the number of its members, but in its ability to preserve the Liberation Path, support genuine renunciant practice, and provide the conditions for the realization of Arahantship.
The Arahanist Order exists to sustain a living tradition dedicated to the Deathless.
